Spearhead Black notches a Semi-Final Finish at UNC Camp- 3 All Stars Selected!
July 19th-July 22nd, 2026. 3 grueling days of incredibly physical and high level lacrosse at UNC Chapel Hill. Coached by Jack Joyce.
Spearhead Black, led by Captains Ethan Schmidt (2027), Granger Sutsko (2027), Tyler Ball (2028) , and Conor Dorst (2028), would take on some incredibly skilled opponents, one after the other in a 72 hour window. Playing 7 games in 3 days is difficult regardless of who you're playing...but when you play teams like Red Devil, Minnesota Loons, NPAA Panthers, and Langley (VA)...it's an even taller task.
The Black team would kick of the week by beating Red Devil 9-4 in a convincing 9am game before taking down MLC at 2pm. The game was cut short with 16 minutes left in the second half due to lightning. Since Spearhead Black had a convincing 4-1 lead at the time, the score would hold and improve the team's record to 2-0. The night of 7/20 was significantly impacted by thunderstorms in the area. All games were moved indoors and shortened to one, 30 minute half. Under these conditions, Spearhead black would beat a talented Panthers team 6-2, leaving them with a final record of 3-0 at the end of Day 1.
Day 2 (7/21) would start off with an absolute showdown of game between Spearhead Black (3-0) and Minnesota Loons (3-0). This was also a rematch of the 2025 UNC Team Camp championship which Spearhead (then Panthers) won by one goal. The 2026 matchup went back and forth all game as both teams left it all on the field. In the final 30 seconds, the Minnesota Loons would call a time out and ultimately score the game tying goal with 17 seconds left on the clock. In overtime, Spearhead Black would have an opportunity to win the game but ultimately the shot didn't fall. Minnesota loons would come down and seal the game with a game winner.
After the overtime loss at 10am, Spearhead Black would faceoff against another very strong opponent in perennial state championship contender, Langley High School (Northern VA). It was another back and forth game that came right down to the wire. With 8 seconds left, the Langley goalie (an eventual all star who had 12+ saves in the game) would clear the ball full field and score the game winning goal. Final score: Langley 7 Spearhead Black 6.
Even with the 2 1 goal losses, Spearhead Black managed to secured the #2 seed and a trip to the semi-finals where they would faceoff against Red Devil for the second time. Unfortunately, fatigue set in and Red Devil ran away with the game in the second half leaving the Spearhead Black team with a 3rd place finish.
Spearhead Black had 3 players named to the camp All-Star Team:
-Midfielder Bolt Wilton (2027)
-Attack Tyler Ball (2028)
-LSM Landon Sheppard (2028)
The following players also received nominations:
-Defense Granger Sutsko (2027)
-Midfielder Ollie Sutsko (2029)
All in all, it was an incredibly successful weekend for our Spearhead Black team! 3 days of great competition, incredible memories with teammates, and pure enjoyment for the game. We can't wait to take our teams back next year!
