Spearhead Blue Attends the UNC Team Camp!
Spearhead Blue competed against teams from all over the country at the University of North Carolina!
July 19th- July 22nd, 2026- Spearhead Black and Spearhead Blue attend the UNC Camp for 4 days of elite competition!
The night of Sunday, July 19th, both Spearhead teams arrived in Chapel Hill for their night practice to kick off the UNC Camp. Each program was given a 1 hour practice window to get ready for a week full of games played at 3 venues: The indoor practice facility, and outdoor practice field directly adjacent, and the UNC Field Hockey Field. Some of our players had been off for a couple of weeks after completing their travel ball circuits in June. Others were coming directly to the camp from the PLC tournament in Boyds, Maryland. Regardless, Sunday night was very important for our program as we tried to get loose and lock in to compete against elite competition like Minnesota Loons, CDH, Red Devil, NPAA Panthers, and more.
Each team had games spread out throughout the day. Our Blue team, our JV team, played at the 9am, 1pm, and 6pm time slots each day. Our Black team (Varsity) would play at 10am, 2pm, and 7pm each day. Two 22 minute running halves with a 5 minute half time. No timeouts until the final 2 minutes of the second half. NFHS Rules.
The Blue Team (coached by Matt Day) started off the camp on 7/20 with a hard fought game vs the Bold City Eagles out of Jacksonville, FL. Both teams took a little time to get going and the game ended in a 3-4 loss. In their next game Spearhead Blue would lose to the Minnesota Loons, an incredibly talented team who's been playing together for years. However, in game 3, the Blue team would get the party started by beating Team Carolina in their final game of the opening day. After gaining some momentum in game 3, the Blue team followed it up with another win over Red Devil in the 9am game on Tuesday 9/21, pulling to a record of 2-2 for the camp.
In their final bracket game before playoff seeding, Spearhead Blue ran into a buzzsaw in CDH (the eventual bracket champions) eventually losing 10-4. There were a lot of penalties, unnecessary roughness calls, and even a couple of punches thrown...all coming from one team. Our players didn't take the bait, they didn't retaliate, they simply took responsibility for the outcome and kept doing everything they could to compete and stay level headed. We took ALOT of pride in our performance considering our team was primarily made up of rising freshman and rising sophomores. Most of the teams in our bracket were playing with Juniors and Seniors.
After finishing bracket play 2-3, Spearhead Blue claimed the #4 seed and made the playoffs! Waiting in round 1: a rematch with #1 seeded CDH, the team who had beaten us 10-4 only 4 hours before. But this time around, at 6pm, in the baking sun and 90 degree heat, things would be much different...we stood up to the bullies! Right from the first whistle, our players made it clear they weren't going to be intimidated or pushed around. Made it clear that they didn't care how "undersized" or "inexperienced" they were. They made a choice: to leave it all out there and live with the result. Spearhead blue would jump out a 3-1 lead halfway through the first half and you could feel all of the momentum on our side. Halftime 4-2. Halfway through the second half 4-4. Ultimately, the #1 seeded CDH would mount a come back and win the game 7-5 to advance to the championship game; but Spearhead Blue could hold their heads high. The only way to describe it is: the boys played out of their minds!
The morning of 7/22, the final day of camp, Spearhead Blue would play in a consolation game where all players were given equal playing time to reward them for their dedication to the team throughout the week.
Standouts for the Spearhead Blue team include:
-Midfielder Quinn Bunch (2030) for his dominant play between the lines and for finishing as the leading scorer for the Blue Team
-Midfielder Mack Wilton (2029) as a non-stop transition threat and lock down defense at the midfield
-Midfielder Birk Wilton (2029) for his physicality, creative dodging, and incredible ability to learn on the fly
-LSM Conor Burcham (2029) with 6 goals on the weekend and 20+ ground balls
-Defenseman Rocco Muti (2029) who fought through a foot injury to anchor a very strong defense
-Face off Specialist Davis Bogan (2029) who, in his first games EVER playing lacrosse, scored a goal and got an assist
We are incredibly proud of this group and can't wait to see what they do in the future. We also can't wait to attend the UNC Camp next year!
Spearhead Lacrosse will resume in Fall 2026 as Spearhead Black, Spearhead Blue, and Spearhead 2029 take the stage and compete against the best teams in the Southeast!
